treatments and shooting scripts

film treatment: a summary of a film or TV show, it should communicate all of the essential scenes, themes, and tone of the project to entice or pitch to buyers and producers into reading, developing, or even purchasing your ideas. Film treatments are also referred to as story treatments, script treatments, and movie treatments.

elements

  • title- the confirmed or working title
  • name and contact info- name, number, email
  • format and genre- film type and category
  • logline- one or two sentence summary
  • key character- introduction to the main characters
  • summary of the story
  • conveys themes and tone
advantages

saves time for you as a reader and the writer
good to have something physical to present so they can read it over and make a decision
good way to present the potential of the idea
more likely to get a producer to read a treatment than they would a full script
easy to share
great way to see if there is interest before spending lots of time on it
early and essential part of the film development process
for a series- quick way to pitch ideas for new episodes

disadvantages

not detailed
lacks budget, time information
no information about potential actors, location
no visuals as its a written document, largely left to imagination

what to do to write a film treatment
write it in the present tense- using present tense helps show action and describes the events happening
use it as a roadmap- let your firm treatment guide you through the screenplay
keep it simple

what not to do
being overly specific
writing too much
using images or nonstandard formatting

order:
choose title
write log line
summaries the plot
describe the characters
use 3 act structure
wrap up the story

shooting script: a version of a screenplay used during the production of a motion picture.

elements:
scene numbers
camera angles/ directions
detailed special effects
detailed stunt work/ action sequences
specific info on sets, costumes, lighting
special notations regarding acting
